For example, for some purposes, such as an application for Italiancitizenship, the impartiality of the translator is essential and so it cannot be the same person (or one of the persons) to whom the document to be translated refers.

•   Simple translations

•   Sworn translations. A sworn translation means one involving a sworn oath

    by the translator in the Law Courts (before an official of the Clerk of the Court’s office).

    A sworn translation is required for certificates, diplomas, legal deeds and all those

    Italian documents that need to be valid abroad or foreign documents that need

    to be valid in Italy, which require official certification by the translator regarding

    the conformity between the original text and the translated text.

    The procedure for a sworn translation involves the use of € 16 revenue stamps

     and the number of stamps varies according to the total number of translation pages.

•   Authentication or Apostille. The authentication or placing an Apostille is the next step after a sworn translation. Authentication involves a representative of the Prefecture or of the Public Prosecutor’s Office authenticating the signature of the official of the Clerk of the Court’s office who received and registered the sworn translation. Documents issued by foreign authorities that need to be shown in Italy or those issued by Italian authorities that need to have validity abroad are usually the ones that are authenticated or given an apostille.

The stamp of authentication is issued whenever a foreign certificate is translated, certified and authenticated coming from a country which is not party to any International Convention and the same applies to Italian documents or certificates that need to be valid in a country that has not signed up to any Convention on the subject.

Conversely, the Apostilleis applied whenever a foreign certificate comes from a country that signed up to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961and, vice versa, when any document or certificate issued in Italy needs to be made legally valid in one of the countries that were signatories of that Convention.
